SALT LAKE CITY — Intermountain Healthcare named its long-standing chief operating officer as its new president and CEO of the health system on Thursday.

Rob Allen was selected by the Intermountain board of trustees after a search process that included health care leader candidates from across the country.

"Rob embodies the Intermountain values and will provide steady, servant leadership to the organization. He has always put our patients and caregivers first," Mike Leavitt, chairman of the Intermountain Healthcare Board, said in a statement. Leavitt is a former Utah governor and former U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services.

Allen served as the CEO of hospitals in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Wyoming before joining Intermountain in 2008. He has served as a region operating officer, the CEO of Intermountain Park City Medical Center and as a region vice president. In total, he has more than 25 years of health care leadership experience, according to the company.

"I'm humbled and proud to have this leadership opportunity, working with our incredible team of caregivers and providers," Allen said in a statement. "Each of us has the privilege to build on Intermountain's legacy and carry forward our mission and charge to be a model health system that inspires the world. Intermountain is a place for big ideas and even bigger hearts. I'm confident that we will continue helping people live the healthiest lives possible."

Allen will take over leadership from Lydia Jumonville who has served as the interim president for the last few months. Jumonville became the interim president in August after former President Marc Harrison accepted a leadership position to run a health care platform business for General Catalyst.

Jumonville plans to retire at the end of 2023, and will serve as the executive sponsor of integration for Intermountain until then.

Allen will take over leadership of Intermountain Healthcare on Dec. 1.

The company announced in September that it plans to change its name to Intermountain Health in 2023.
