TAYLORSVILLE — A Utah Highway Patrol trooper was helping drivers who slid off the freeway early Thursday when another driver lost control of his vehicle and smashed into the back of the trooper's patrol car.
Between 4:45 a.m. and 5 a.m., troopers responded to three crashes on westbound I-215 near Redwood Road. The vehicles had been going too fast for conditions, hit black ice and slid off the freeway, said UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden.
One woman who slid off the road and hit a barrier was taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries, he said.
About 5:20 a.m., while troopers were assisting the drivers that had gone off the road, a fourth vehicle, a pickup truck, also lost control and slammed into the back of a trooper's patrol car, causing heavy damage to the rear of the vehicle, Roden said.
The trooper was outside of his car at the time and was not injured. The driver of the truck also did not suffer any significant injuries, he said.
The UHP says the incident is a good reminder for drivers to slow down when roads become slick and have the potential for black ice.
