Desert Hills wins boys 4A, Mountain View wins 5A to finish day

The post-race exhaustion was obvious as the boys in the final two races of the day left it all out on the course.Trey Despain from Pineview collapsed upon crossing the finish line first and had to be helped off the course after posting a 15:26 time — 13 seconds ahead of Snow Canyon's James Butterfield in second.It was Desert Hills who took the team title, however, finishing with three runners in the top six in 4A."Snow Canyon did really well, Desert Hills, all those guys," Despain said. "I just gave it everything I got, as hard as I could. I didn't want any regrets."In the final race of the day, Orem senior Tayson Echohawk came in first with a time of 14:53 — second-fastest of the day behind American Fork's Daniel Simmons at 14:49. Liam Heninger came in second to help Mountain View win the 5A team title."My brain was telling me, 'You're just tired, you're done,'" Echohawk said. "It was a really hard race. I knew it was gonna be hard, but I mean, you want to win you got to fight."

Cedar owns girls 4A; Timpview, Springville split individual, team titles in 5A

Cedar High had three of the top six finishers in the girls 4A race — including individual champ Emma Page with a time of 18:58 — to claim first place as a team."It wasn't actually as bad as I thought," Page said. "I'm really happy."Sophomore Jane Hedengren of Timpview came in first with a time of 17:25 in the final and largest race of the day in girls 5A."My plan for today was to just hold and try to pull away with maybe a half mile left," Hedengren said. "I've had some trouble this season with injury so I was just trying to give it my best shot today and hopefully come up with a win."Springville took the team title in girls 5A.Boys 4A and 5A are the final races of the day.

3A, 2A races highlighted by Kanab freshman, Millard brothers

The girls 3A race kicked off the afternoon Tuesday, with Rozlyn Stowe and Carbon taking first place."I don't think I could have done it without my team," Stowe said. "Because they helped me a lot and my coaches have also helped me a lot."Freshman Kennidee Glazier — the lone competitor from Kanab — dominated the girls 2A race, finishing almost a full minute (18:27) ahead of the second-place Chayden Sargent of North Summit.(19:22). North Summit took the team title.

Just having all the support that I had, being able to just run — it's so fun."Glazier was the first-ever cross country champion to come from Kanab.In the boys races, Richard Crane of Richfield took the individual title in the 3A race with a time of 15:57, and Ogden won the team title."If you're on your best it should look easy, you know?" Crane said after shrugging across the finish line. "I've wanted a state championship ever since my freshman year. Now I got it. So I'm super happy."Brothers Michael and Ben Ralphs took first and second in the 2A race, respectively, and helped Millard to a repeat championship as a team."I didn't even know he was there," Michael said of racing his brother. "Then I turned around (at the end) and it was just Ben."

Altamont's Arnold wins boys 1A, American Fork clinches 6A

Ashton Arnold avenged his second-place finish in 2021 to claim the boys 1A title Tuesday morning."Losing last year, obviously, (motivated me), but about a week ago, I decided to go to basketball practice and I twisted my ankle," Arnold said. "So I was worried I wasn't gonna be able to run today, but I just pushed through it and it was just inspiring to me."Daniel Simmons, a transplant from Salmon, Idaho, easily claimed first in the boys 6A race with a time of 14:49.He donned a "Stop AF" T-shirt after his top individual finish and American Fork's team win, inspired by Steve Prefontaine's "Stop Pre" shirt."I wasn't actually worried about placement," Simmons said. "I really was coming for the time, (but) I wanted to win and I was gonna fight for the win."

Panguitch sweeps girls 1A, Lone Peak wins girls 6A

Championship Tuesday got underway at the Salt Lake City Regional Athletic Complex with the girls' 1A race.Adelaide Englestead came in first with a time of 20:06, and three of her Panguitch teammates came in spots 2-4 to secure the team title."That's really, really cool," Englestead said of the sweep. "I couldn't be more proud of them. We've all worked so hard."Englestead will compete in the state volleyball championships this weekend with Panguitch.The girls' 6A race came next, with Andie Aagard and the Lone Peak Knights taking first.Aagard also took first in the state mountain biking championship over the weekend."Mountain biking is like more of an individual sport," Aagard said. "This is way more fun being with the other girls and running as a team is just so fun."
