WEST VALLEY CITY — One person is dead after a three-car accident in West Valley City Friday evening when police say a car veered into oncoming traffic.

At 7:18 p.m., a vehicle westbound on 4100 South in West Valley City crossed over into the eastbound lanes and hit a vehicle on its way to make a lefthand turn onto 4000 West, according to West Valley City Police Lt. Jason Vincent. The vehicle that was hit then collided with a third car in the eastbound lanes of the street.

Police said the front-seat passenger in the vehicle preparing to make a left turn did not survive the crash, Vincent said. The driver of that car was transported to the hospital with injuries but is expected to survive. A second person was also transported to the hospital.

Multiple lanes were closed for a few hours Friday evening while police investigated the crash.

"Things are quickly evolving, and we're just taking it as it comes and want to make sure that the investigation is solid," Vincent said.

He encouraged drivers to be less concerned about getting tickets and more concerned about staying safe; that is the goal of traffic enforcement.

"It always pays to be an attentive driver, " Vincent said. "Just be mindful, slow down, save yourself a ticket and save yourself from getting hurt."

The name of the person who died had not been released as of Saturday afternoon.
