OREM — A man who police say began shooting after fleeing the scene of a vehicle accident in Orem on Saturday morning is now in police custody.
Orem Police officers said in a social media statement that they were dispatched at about 7:30 a.m. to respond to a vehicle accident near 800 South and Orem Boulevard. A man involved in the accident fled the scene and fired shots as he was running toward a home near 1000 South and 100 East, police said.
Police said the man barricaded himself inside the home, which he did not live at, and officers began negotiations with the man. Police said occupants of the home were evacuated safely.
The man "peacefully gave up" after telling officers that he was injured, and he was transported to the hospital, according to police.
The department advised the public of the incident on social media Saturday morning and asked residents to avoid the area near 1000 South and Main Street in Orem if possible.
Orem police said none of the officers involved was injured, and that the Utah County Officer Involved Critical Incident Team was called to investigate.
"We want to thank all police agencies that have responded to assist in this incident," the statement said.
