CLEARFIELD — Police arrested a man who they say unintentionally started a fire at a Clearfield apartment complex on Sunday that left multiple families without a home.
Cameron Grover, 23, was booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of his involvement in the fire, said Clearfield Police Assistant Chief Devin Rogers.
According to police, Grover went to visit a friend in the apartment complex, but when the friend wasn't home, Grover went into a nearby shed and lit a fire to stay warm. He allegedly did not put the fire out when he left, Rogers said.
The fire left four to five families, including children, displaced after it broke out around 11 a.m., according to North Davis Fire District Chief Mark Becraft.
When firefighters arrived, one of the four apartments in the complex was on fire with visible smoke and flames moving toward the roof, Becraft said. It took them around 20 minutes to an hour to control the blaze.
Becraft said two units were a complete loss and others are being evaluated for smoke damage.
Firefighters estimate there was around $500,000 in damages.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the local Red Cross is assisting the displaced families.
It is the second two-alarm fire, requiring outside assistance, that North Davis Fire has been called on in a week.
"The response is quick and fast, and fortunately, we're dealing in the day time and not dealing with water icing up," Becraft said, adding that all occupants were safe from Sunday's fire.
