SALT LAKE CITY — Check back here for the latest scores from all the Week 3 high school football games across the state.
Game of the Week: Bingham at Corner Canyon
Why did we choose this game?
It's a matchup of two powerhouse programs: Region 3's Bingham vs. Region 4's Corner Canyon. The Miners used to be the envy of the sport as they dominated the top classification of football for several years en route to state title runs. But the Chargers have the dynasty now and have reeled off three straight 6A state titles — and they don't look to be slowing down anytime soon.
The two programs met up last season in the third week of the year, and Corner Canyon had no problems showing Bingham who was boss in a 42-20 win. While the 2021 version could have a similar look to it, there's different personnel and a renewed desire to dethrone the sport's top team in the state. Can the No. 6 Miners in the KSL.com Top 20+1 ranking reclaim dominance or will the No. 1 Chargers remain the overwhelming favorite.
We look forward to finding out Friday night.
Other games we'll be watching
- Skyridge holds Herriman scoreless in a 23-0 victory
- Syracuse holds Westlake's offense scoreless en route to 3rd straight victory
Another high school football game was stricken from the schedule due to COVID-19 protocols after Lone Peak's trip to East was canceled. It's the second game disruption for COVID-19 of the season, after Highland's season opener against Bountiful was canceled.
The Knights were riding high after a 31-24 win over Bishop Alemany, the No. 9-ranked team in California to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Leopards, meanwhile, were looking for their first win of the year after a brutal start to the schedule and back-to-back losses to defending state champions Orem and Corner Canyon.
East is scheduled to play at Park City on Friday, Sept. 3 in Week 4, while Lone Peak will play at Bishop Gorman (Nev.) before opening Region 4 play at Pleasant Grove.
American Fork's road tilt at West was also canceled this week due to COVID-19 protocols, making it the third game this season in the Salt Lake School District to be canceled.
The No. 2 Cavemen are coming off a 45-14 win over previously-ranked No. 12 Weber, who started the season off with a 55-35 loss to Region 3 favorite Bingham. West, which opened the season with a 24-7 win over Clearfield, fell to Herriman 32-20 in Week 2 and was looking to rebound from its first loss of the season.
But a canceled game saves the Panthers from having to face a dominant Cavemen team that could rival No. 1 Corner Canyon in its pursuits of a state title. American Fork is scheduled to play at JSerra Catholic in California on Saturday, Sept. 5, while West will travel to play Cyprus on Friday.
