HURRICANE, Washington County — A California man died Sunday while he was riding an ATV in the Sand Mountain Recreation Area in southwest Utah.
Erik Alvarez, 36, of Artesia, California, died in the accident, according to a news release from Utah State Parks officials.
The accident took place about 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the recreation area, which is on Bureau of Land Management land just outside Sand Hollow State Park near Hurricane.
State park rangers responded to the area on a call of a possible cardiac arrest, the release said. Alvarez was visiting the area with a group, but was riding an ATV by himself. Another member of the group found Alvarez and called for help.
Emergency responders from Utah State Parks, Hurricane City EMS, and Washington County Search and Rescue attempted to revive Alvarez, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Alvarez was wearing a helmet when the accident occurred, according to the release. The incident remains under investigation, and officials did not say what exactly caused Alvarez's death.
