AMERICAN FORK — American Fork councilwoman Barbara Christiansen died at age 74 on Friday from ongoing health conditions, city officials said.

Christiansen was a resident of American Fork for 43 years and was an acting member of the American Fork City council. She took office as a council member in January 2018 and helped improved the communication efforts of the city, according to a press release, including a monthly report titled "Citizens Want to Know." Christiansen was also credited for her work on the city's rebranding, completion of a regional park and infrastructure and zoning improvements.

American Fork's mayor and City Council offered "their deepest sorrow and sympathy" for her loss, officials said.

"Barbara was a true friend to us and our city," Mayor Brad Frost said. "Her wisdom and authentic concern for our community was always evident in her words and deeds."

During her four-decade residency in the city, Christiansen worked as a reporter for the American Fork Citizen weekly newspaper and the Daily Herald. Christiansen retired from the Daily Herald in 2012.

"Between her career as a reporter and her time as a council member, Barbara has participated in more city council meetings than any other person," City Administrator David Bunker said. "Her positive attitude and institutional knowledge will be missed."

According to the release, Christiansen is survived by her husband and four children. Funeral details have yet to be set.

Further details were not released.
