SALT LAKE CITY — A Sandy police officer suffered minor injuries after being rear-ended at a red light on Monday morning, according to officials.

The officer was transported via ambulance to a hospital in stable condition, but the extent of his injuries was unknown, Saratoga Springs Police Cpl. Manis said. The officer's injuries are believed to be "somewhat minor," according to Manis, and further details weren't released.

While stopped at a red light in a northbound lane at the intersection of Redwood Road and Camp Williams Avenue, a Toyota pickup truck failed to stop, tried to avoid the officer before rear-ending him, and then went through the intersection and crashed into another car turning northbound onto Redwood Road from Camp Williams Avenue.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, and police don't believe impairment played a role. Distracted driving and mechanical failure are both being investigated as possible factors in the crash.

The other two drivers involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and were not transported to a hospital. The crash caused lane closures for a few hours Monday morning, but all lanes had reopened by noon.
