BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — Two men who police say got into an argument, in part, over who won the presidential election, resulted in shots being fired and one man arrested.
Jerry Allen Aubrey, 41, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail about 1:20 a.m. Sunday for investigation of discharge of a firearm, intoxication and threatening violence.
Unified police were notified by a man who said he, Aubrey and a woman were at a cabin in Big Cottonwood Canyon and Aubrey was holding the others "against their will for over four hours and they were afraid to leave the cabin," according to a police affidavit.
Aubrey was "highly intoxicated and made multiple threats to kill and/or harm the victim," the affidavit states.
After his arrest, Aubrey said he had had an argument with the victim regarding relationship styles and "political views," according to police. The political argument was over President Donald Trump losing the election, said Unified Police Sgt. Melody Cutler.
At one point, Aubrey walked out of the cabin. The other man also walked outside, "and when the victim found the suspect outside, the victim heard one to three gunshots coming from the area of the suspect. The victim believed the suspect fired one shot from the firearm into his direction," the affidavit says.
The man went back into the cabin and said he would not allow Aubrey back inside until he could confirm he no longer had a gun. When Aubrey was allowed back inside, "the victim reported the suspect continued to argue and threaten to kill him," according to the affidavit.
At one point, the man told police he had to block Aubrey from getting into a cabinet where knives and another firearm were kept.
Officers recovered at least one shell casing and a magazine from the scene before arresting Aubrey, whom they noted had a strong odor of alcohol coming from him and "was having a hard time standing without assistance," the affidavit states.
