SALT LAKE CITY — Two sister missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are recovering after a man stabbed them during a home invasion at their Houston, Texas, apartment early Sunday, officials said.

The women, ages 19 and 20, are expected to survive. The man stabbed the women as they slept inside their first-story apartment at The Park at Willowbrook apartments about 4:14 a.m. Sunday, according to Harris County Sheriff's Sgt. David Angstadt.

"It is possible that it is random. However a motive at this time is really not known," Angstadt said.

The man is under the age of 20 and is also a resident of the apartment complex, authorities said. A crime scene investigator who was taking pictures of the property later spotted the man and took him into custody.

The women are serving in the Texas Houston Mission of the church, according to spokesman Daniel Woodruff.

"We sincerely pray for them and their families as they deal with and heal from this ordeal," Woodruff said in an emailed statement. "We are grateful for the medical workers and first responders who have been caring for the missionaries since this occurred."

Neither of the women, nor the man who was taken into custody, were identified. Further details about the incident were not available.
