TestUtah lab ‘not in compliance,’ federal letter says

A federal audit of the Timpanogos Regional Hospital lab that has been processing COVID-19 tests for TestUtah found that the lab is “not in compliance” with all federal regulations. But it wasn’t clear Thursday specifically what those violations are. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sent a letter dated Friday to Timpanogos Regional Hospital notifying it that a “complaint survey” conducted at the hospital’s lab May 18 found “your laboratory is not in compliance with all applicable CLIA conditions,” or conditions required for the lab to be certified under federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. — Katie McKellar, KSL

30 confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19 after religious revival in Idaho Falls

At least 30 people who attended a religious revival in Idaho Falls have been diagnosed with or are suspected to have COVID-19. The Idaho Falls Potter’s House Christian Center on Lomax Street held a multi-day revival near the end of May. In the days following the event, people who attended began showing novel coronavirus symptoms. They were tested, and the positive cases were reported to Eastern Idaho Public Health and the Southeastern Idaho Public Health District. Eastern Idaho Public Health spokeswoman Mimi Taylor said health officials are speaking with at least 41 people from 12 households who attended the revival. Within that health district, 11 people were found to have COVID-19. At least 6 other cases are considered probable. — By Eric Grossarth, EastIdahoNews.com

Utah sees 316 new cases of COVID-19, no new deaths

On Thursday, Utah's number of new COVID-19 cases rose above 300 in one day for only the second time so far during the pandemic, as health officials continue investigating a recent spike in cases. The number of COVID-19 cases increased by 316 from Wednesday in Utah, with no new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health. Thursday’s totals give Utah 10,813 total confirmed cases, with 850 total hospitalizations and 117 total deaths from the disease. The NBA set to return on July 31 in Orlando

Sports fans rejoice! The NBA is back. Or at least has taken the first major step towards returning. On Thursday, the league’s board of governors approved the league’s plan to restart the season, the NBA announced. According to the plan, the league is set to resume its season July 31 with 22 teams converging at the ESPN Wide World Of Sports complex on the Disney campus near Orlando. Six postseason hopefuls will join the 16 current playoff teams in Florida as the season restarts. — Ryan Miller, KSL.com

New unemployment claims slowing in Utah as state reopens

New figures show the number of people requesting unemployment assistance in Utah last week dropped below 5,000 for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic took hold in the United States but remained at a rate far higher than normal. Utah officials said Thursday that 4,996 people applied for unemployment in the week ending May 30. That was a 8% drop from the previous week and the eighth consecutive week that claims have decreased since a peak of 33,000 in the week ending April 4. — Associated Press

Gephardt: Confusion has some trashing their stimulus money

Many people’s stimulus checks were directly deposited into their bank account while others got a paper check from the IRS, which came in clearly identifiable envelopes showing they were from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. But according to AARP, there is another way people are getting their stimulus money, and it’s creating a problem. The IRS is sending out some payments by prepaid debit card in a plain envelope. Kathy Stokes, AARP’s director of Fraud Prevention Programs, said people are mistaking it for junk mail. “They think it’s a scam and they discard it, when in fact, this is the actual economic impact payment for four million people,” she said. — Matt Gephardt, KSL TV

October general conference will be digital only

October's general conference will be virtual once again, the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced in a letter on Thursday. In April, the church held the conference digitally due to the coronavirus pandemic. Out of concern for the health and safety of attendees — many of which come from all over the world — the church decided to follow the same pattern as April's conference. — Ryan Miller, KSL.com

Utah Senate President Stuart Adams tests positive for COVID-19 antibodies

Utah Senate President Stuart Adams has tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies, meaning he likely had the disease at some point over the past several months. In a statement Thursday, Adams said he doesn't remember having the disease and did not have any recognizable symptoms aside from some tiredness after the Utah legislative session ended in March. “Though the antibody test is not 100 percent accurate, I am cautiously optimistic I have COVID-19 antibodies," Adams said. "I will continue to follow public health experts' guidance and CDC guidelines and wear a mask in public and observe social distancing practices. Together, we can help avoid inadvertently infecting someone who may be severely affected by this virus and keep our economy open.” He said he is also waiting to see if he will be eligible to donate plasma in order to help other people fight COVID-19. Adams also added that he is a "strong advocate" for wearing a mask in public. 1.9 million seek jobless aid even as reopenings slow layoffs

Nearly 1.9 million people applied for U.S. unemployment benefits last week, the ninth straight decline since applications spiked in mid-March, a sign that the gradual reopening of businesses has slowed the loss of jobs. The diminishing pace suggests that the job market meltdown that was triggered by the coronavirus may have bottomed out as more companies call at least some of their former employees back to work. The total number of people who are now receiving jobless aid rose only slightly to 21.5 million, suggesting that rehiring is offsetting some of the ongoing layoffs. — Associated Press

Nearly 1,800 of Utah’s total COVID-19 cases have happened in the past week, health department officials said.

The Salt Lake City School District announced plans to continue providing meals to children throughout the summer.

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 295 from Tuesday, with four new reported deaths.

Officials with the Davis County Health Department said they are expecting a growth in coronavirus cases and the county will need to hire dozens to help with an increased focus on contact tracing.
