Utah sees 70 new cases of COVID-19, 5 more deaths

SALT LAKE CITY — Five more people have died from COVID-19 in Utah, bringing the state to a total of 73 deaths since the pandemic began

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 70 from Monday, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Among the deaths reported Tuesday were four Salt Lake County residents and one Weber County resident, the health department reported.

Two of the people from Salt Lake County were men between the ages of 60 and 84. One was hospitalized at the time of his death, and the other was a long-term care facility resident. The two others from Salt Lake County were women over the age of 85 who were long-term care facility residents.

The person from Weber County who died was also a woman over the age of 85 who living at a long-term care facility, according to the health department. Officials initially said the woman was from Utah County, but later clarified she was from Weber County.

There is not a COVID-19 press conference scheduled for Tuesday. State officials are expected to provide an update on Wednesday afternoon.

Tuesday’s totals give Utah 6,432 total confirmed cases, with 535 total hospitalizations and 73 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 6,362 total cases in the state.

The new numbers indicate a 1.1% increase in positive cases since Monday. Of the 153,485 total tests in Utah so far, 4.2% have tested positive for COVID-19. There were 2,900 people tested between Monday and Tuesday, the health department reports.

The total number of cases reported by the health department includes all cases of COVID-19 since Utah’s outbreak began, including those who are infected now, those who have recovered from the disease and those who have died.

The health department reports 99 people are currently hospitalized for COVID-19 in Utah.

Another 3,267 people are estimated to have recovered from the disease. Anyone who was diagnosed with COVID-19 three or more weeks ago and has not died is considered recovered.
