SALT LAKE CITY — As 2019 comes to a close, it’s a good time to reflect on everything that happened throughout the year.
Google released its top search trends of the year earlier this month, and it appears Disney had a hold over the U.S. and Utah. For example, Disney Plus — the entertainment and media company’s new streaming service that launched in November — grabbed the top search both nationwide and in the state.
Disney movies “Captain Marvel” and “Avengers: Endgame” grabbed the third and seventh spots in Utah. Cameron Boyce, the Disney Channel star who died unexpectedly from a medical episode in July, was the 10th-highest trend in the state. He was also the second-highest national search.
Of Utah’s top trends, Mackenzie Lueck was the only local search that cracked the top 10. She was the most-searched person and second-most searched term in Utah in 2019, according to Google. Lueck was a University of Utah student who vanished in June and whose body was found in Logan Canyon in early July after a Salt Lake City man was arrested on suspicion of murder regarding her disappearance.
Per Google, Utah’s top 10 searches of the year were:
- Disney Plus
- Mackenzie Lueck
- Captain Marvel
- Game of Thrones
- Notre Dame Cathedral
- Nipsey Hussle
- Avengers Endgame
- Luke Perry
- Antonio Brown
- Cameron Boyce
Overall, Utah's trends weren't far from national trends. Disney Plus, Cameron Boyce, Nipsey Hussle (the Grammy-nominated rapper who was gunned down in March), NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown (who made lots of headlines in 2019 and was released by the Patriots in September following accusations of sexual misconduct), actor Luke Perry (who also died in March after suffering a stroke), "Avengers: Endgame" and the TV show "Game of Thrones" were all on both lists.
Google reported it's top national searches of the year were:
- Disney Plus
- Cameron Boyce
- Nipsey Hussle
- Hurricane Dorian
- Antonio Brown
- Luke Perry
- Avengers Endgame
- Game of Thrones
- iPhone 11
- Jussie Smollett
