‘Parasite,’ Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson among Utah Film Critics Association 2019 award winners

SALT LAKE CITY — One of the most critically acclaimed movies of 2019 was given the top honor by a group of Utah film critics.

Parasite,” was named Best Picture by the Utah Film Critics Association, according to a press release by the group Sunday. The comedy/drama/thriller from director Bong Joon-ho also won Best Original Screenplay and Best Non-English Language Film. The Korean film has racked up several awards and nominations around the world, including winning the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

While Netflix’s “Marriage Story” did not win Best Picture, the two stars of the film, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, both won lead acting awards. Driver and Johansson are nominated for Golden Globes in the same categories.

The documentary “Apollo 11” won three awards by the film association, including Best Documentary Feature.

Joe Pesci was awarded Best Supporting Performance, Male for his role as mob boss Russell Bufalino in Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman.” Florence Pugh was named Best Supporting Performance, Female for her performance as Amy March in “Little Women.”

Golden Globe nominees:

The Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn’t left out of the Utah Film Critics Association awards. Robert Downey Jr. was awarded the inaugural Vice/Martin Award for Performance in a Science-Fiction, Fantasy or Horror Film for his performance in “Avengers: Endgame.” The award was created in honor of late association members Jeff Vice and former KSL-TV film critic Jimmy Martin.

The Utah Film Critics Association is made up of Utah-based film journalists contributing to online, print, and broadcast outlets, according to the association’s website.
