Goose Point Fire 6,500 acres, 60% contained; Fire prevention order issued at West Mountain

The Goose Point Fire, which began Wednesday night, had burned 6,500 acres by Thursday evening and was 60% contained as of 8 p.m., state fire officials said. The Bureau of Land Management West Desert District also issued a fire prevention order that restricted access to the fire area. Unnecessary traffic in the land surrounding the fire was restricted as well. Specifically, south of Lincoln Beach Road, west of 5600 West, north of Highway 141 and east of North Lake Road. The order also restricts target shooting and camping. Property owners, grazing permit holders and other citizens who need to access the area have been asked to coordinate with the incident commander to ensure safety, BLM officials said in a news release.

Mile marker 122 fire burns 1K acres, 25% contained

Both lanes of I-15 reopen in Beaver County

Both lanes of I-15 in Beaver County reopened after a wildfire shut down the highway Thursday afternoon. Lanes were closed for several hours but were both open by 5 p.m. A trailer rollover in Beaver County started the fire on the side of the road about 10 miles south of Cove Fort, authorities said. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Goose Point Fire in southern Utah County now 60% contained

The Goose Point Fire, burning west of Payson in southern Utah County, is 60% contained as of 2:30 p.m., authorities say. Bulldozers are continuing to build fuel break lines around the base of West Mountain, where the fire started, according to a tweet from Utah Fire Info. Fire crews are burning fuels out from the fire line to stop the fire's spread.

Alternate routes in place for drivers due to I-15 wildfire closure in Beaver County

As of 2 p.m., both directions of I-15 are closed about 10 miles south of Cove Fort due to a wildfire that started Thursday afternoon. The fire, dubbed the Mile Marker 122 Fire, was last reported about 400 acres. Northbound I-15 is closed past state route 20 north of Cedar City. Drivers will be diverted onto state Route 20, then to U.S. Highway 89 and to westbound I-70, which will allow them to get back onto I-15. Southbound I-15 is closed past Fillmore in Millard County. Drivers will be diverted to U.S. Highway 6 through Delta, then to state Route 257 through Milford, then to state Route 130 to Cedar City, where they can get back on I-15.

Beaver County wildfire was caused by crash, UHP says

A wildfire that has southbound I-15 closed about 10 miles north of Beaver was caused when a truck hauling a carnival rides trailer detached and rolled, according to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Andy Battenfield. He said no injuries were reported in the crash. The fire, dubbed the Mile Marker 122 Fire, has already burned about 350 acres as of 1:20 p.m., Bureau of Land Management officials said. It's 0% contained. According to Utah Department of Transportation, the southbound I-15 closure is expected to remain in effect until mid-Thursday afternoon. Southbound I-15 traffic is still being diverted onto eastbound I-70 and then onto U.S. Highway 89, Battenfield said. Northbound I-15 lanes remain open but that could change depending on wind direction, he added.

Southbound I-15 closed in Beaver County after rollover crash sparks wildfire

Southbound I-15 is closed about 10 miles south of Cove Fort in Beaver County after a trailer rolled over and then started a fire, authorities say. A truck was hauling a carnival rides trailer, which detached and then rolled, according to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Andy Battenfield. Traffic is being diverted onto eastbound I-70 and then to U.S. Highway 89, Battenfield said. The northbound side of the freeway remains open as crews fight the fire, but that could change if weather conditions shift, he added. The freeway is not expected to reopen until at least 1:30 p.m., according to the Utah Department of Transportation. Access from westbound I-70 to southbound I-15 at the Cove Fort junction is also closed, UDOT said.

BYU observatory safe atop West Mountain as wildfire burns in southern Utah County

The BYU observatory, as well as radio towers, atop West Mountain have been secured as a 3,000-acre wildfire burns on the mountain, authorities say. Wasatch Front Area Fire Management Spokesman Dave Vickers said crews had constructed about six miles of protection lines around the fire perimeter. He said crews will mostly focus on fighting the fire from the ground rather than from the air. Helicopter crews will primarily support ground crews as needed, Vickers said. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality said the fire is moderately impacting air quality in the area. The effects are more noticeable closest to the fire, the agency tweeted.
