SALT LAKE CITY — Former U.S. Senate candidate Jenny Wilson plans to run for Salt Lake County mayor, campaign officials announced Thursday.

Wilson, 53, is expected to formally announce her candidacy for county mayor at 10 a.m. Friday at the Salt Lake County government north building.

"I am excited about this opportunity and will work hard to secure the Democratic Central Committee vote," Wilson told KSL.com in an email.

The Salt Lake County Democratic Central Committee will hold a special election to replace current Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams, likely in late January 2019, Wilson’s campaign said.

McAdams defeated Rep. Mia Love in a tight race for Utah’s 4th Congressional District. McAdams earned just over 50 percent of the vote in that race.

Wilson, a Democrat, ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate against Mitt Romney this year. Romney earned 63 percent of the vote to Wilson’s 31 percent in the Nov. 6 election.

Wilson currently serves on the Salt Lake County Council in an at-large seat. She was elected in 2004, becoming the first woman elected to the body, according to her biography on the county's website. She is currently serving her second six-year term on the county council.

She was raised in Salt Lake City and is the daughter of Ted Wilson, who served as mayor of Salt Lake City from 1976 to 1985.
