OGDEN — Two 16-year-old boys have been arrested for investigation of murder in the shooting death of a woman asleep in her house.

Maria Sanchez, 47, of Ogden, was shot multiple times as she slept in her house in the 300 block of 28th Street shortly after midnight Sunday.

Because of good police work, including critical information obtained by Ogden police officer Jordan Dustin through talking to people on the street, three teenagers were taken into custody for questioning, said Ogden Police Lt. Danielle Croyle. One was eventually released and the other two arrested Monday for investigation of murder.

But Croyle said as of Tuesday, due to conflicting stories being told by the teens, a motive for the shooting was unclear. Detectives were looking at the possibility of mistaken identity, she said, including whether someone else in the house was a target or whether the teens got the wrong house altogether.

It was not immediately known who, if anyone, was in the home with Sanchez at the time she was shot.

A motive for the shooting, regardless of who the intended victim was, was also unknown Tuesday, she said.

Croyle said there were no outstanding suspects in the case.

Under state law, juveniles who are at least 16 years old who are accused of murder can be charged as adults. As of Tuesday, the names of the arrested boys had not been released and no charges filed.
