ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- St. George residents will be able to use solar power to supply about 15 percent of their energy starting in December.

The southern Utah city is working with Dixie Escalante Electric to offer the program to 39,000 residents. It's estimated the program will drop a typical customer's bill by about $9 a month.

Before they can start saving, residents make a one-time payment of up to $6,000 for solar-power generating panels.

Dixie Escalante Electric CEO LaDell Laub says the program helps protect customers against a possible surge in energy costs.
