SALT LAKE CITY — Results of a magnetic resonance imaging scan on the daughter of a BYU football assistant coach brought bad news Friday.
Elsie Mahe, the 3-year-old daughter of BYU running backs coach Reno Mahe who suffered severe respiratory distress Tuesday following an in-home accident, had an MRI on Friday afternoon showing that, while her basic brain functions like breathing, coughing and reacting to pain remain unaffected, the lack of oxygen over a significant period of time has “devastated” the upper lobes of her cerebrum.
“There is nothing more that they can tell us about that,” Reno Mahe said in a statement through family spokesman Jeremy Roberts. “We will continue to hope for a miracle for Elsie.”
No additional statement was made available at the time.
Sunny Mahe said earlier Friday the family is “overwhelmed with gratitude” at the support, both financially, physically and emotionally, they have received since her daughter’s accident. The mother of Elsie Mahe wrote a touching message to the nearly 4,000 supporters of the family Friday morning on Facebook.
“I have felt peace about Elsie,” she wrote. “She seems to be showing slow but positive progress, but the Lord could still call her home. We are not out of the woods. But I trust him and his plan."
Sunny Mahe wanted to thank the support of family, friends and those around the state and country who are hoping for the best.
Roberts set up a GoFundMe* on behalf of the family to aid in various recovery efforts. Utah State head coach Matt Wells was among the latest to tweet a special message for the Mahes; the Aggies play Mahe's Cougars in Provo on Saturday night.
Close friends surprised the Mahes by cleaning and fixing several home projects this week while the parents were at the hospital with Elsie, according to family friend Valarie Andrus. Friends of the family, as well as co-workers like the BYU staff and coaches from the Cougars’ rival University of Utah, have been on hand to comfort the Mahes.“I'm completely overwhelmed and humbled at the hours of prayers, service and support that has been given to my family,” Sunny Mahe said.
“From the deepest and most tender places of my heart, I thank you. I wish I had better words than that to express my gratitude. I can never repay the gift that you have given to me.”
