SALT LAKE CITY — A South Ogden tutor has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of possession of child pornography.

Jeremiah David Rivera, 25, was charged late last year in state court with 20 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony. That case was later dismissed when a federal case was filed in February.

Authorities came upon Rivera's case in December when a co-worker reported picking up his misplaced phone, trying to figure out who the device belonged to and discovering child pornography.

Police searched Rivera's phone and reported finding more than 2,000 images and 98 videos depicting child pornography. Other information found on the phone confirmed that it was his, police said.

Rivera admitted to the allegations as part of the plea document filed Tuesday, though court documents indicate the illicit images numbered in the hundreds, not thousands.

"Beginning on a date unknown and continuing through on or about Dec. 5, 2015, the defendant possessed several hundred images and videos of child pornography on his cellphone and on his laptop computer," the document states. "These images and videos were downloaded from the internet and include prepubescent children engaged in sexually explicit conduct."

Rivera previously indicated online that he was the founder of That Learning Place, a tutoring service based in South Ogden.

Rivera's sentencing is scheduled for March 22. U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball has ordered a psychosexual evaluation of Rivera, to be completed before that hearing.
