SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah's nine college and university presidents are getting a raise.

The Utah Board of Regents on Friday approved the bump in pay, which varies from 3 percent to 5 percent.

The interim commissioner of higher education, David L. Buhler, says the boosts are needed to attract and retain quality presidents in Utah. The Legislature has approved funding for the increased salaries.

State officials also say the move is part of a wider effort to bring employee salaries to at least 90 percent of their peer average.

The increases take effect July 1.
