IRON COUNTY — A rehabilitated eagle that was being held since January for medical treatment was released back into the wild near Cedar Breaks and Brian Head over the weekend in an inspiring moment for both observers and those who had cared for it.

The bird was found in January near a farm in a weakened condition, unable to move. After being collected, veterinarians with Southwest Wildlife Foundation determined that it was suffering from lead poisoning, and at that point weren’t sure it would survive. But after lengthy treatment and rest, the majestic creature was able to fly once again.

Southwest Wildlife Foundation's licensed wildlife rehabilitator, Martin Tyner spent two months with the bird. Geri Petkowski was given the chance to release the eagle upon its recovery, and says it’s an experience she won’t soon forget.

“It really is a spiritual experience,” Petkowski said. “It’s a new beginning for both the eagle and myself.”

Wildlife officials say that after its full recovery, the eagle is strong enough to hunt and live on its own.

It's a beautiful sight, that regal look in that eagle's face. The eyes, and the beak, just a beautiful bird.

Others who witnessed the release were inspired by the sight of the bird taking flight once again.

“It’s a beautiful sight, that regal look in that eagle’s face,” said onlooker Gordon Gurr. “The eyes, and the beak, just a beautiful bird.”

Officials say they’re unsure how the eagle got lead poisoning, but that they’re keeping a close eye on the area for illegal shooting.
