SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Representative Neil Hansen wants to let Utahns register to vote at the polls on Election Day.
The Ogden Democratic will sponsor a bill to make that possible when the Legislature convenes next week.
Under the proposal unregistered voters could vote if they can provide poll workers with identification and proof of residency. The ballots could not be thrown out later.
The bill comes on the heels of complaints about voting irregularities during the November 2007 election in Ogden.
A second bill from Hansen would limit the power of poll challengers and make the election auditing process more transparent.
Currently Utah election law prevents a private citizen from examining election data. Hansen is proposing that votes remain anonymous, but that independent groups have access to the data to check election totals.
