RIVERDALE — Utah Department of Public Safety officials are asking for the public's help in identifying a man who was found dead near the Riverdale Road overpass.

The body of what appears to be an adult male was discovered Monday about 9 a.m. by Utah Department of Transportation employees, said Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson. They were working in the area of the overpass when they noticed an odor they initially thought was an animal.

"One of the workers found the body underneath the overpass," Johnson said. "All indications appear, based on personal belongings and so forth, that the person is a transient."

The man's body was badly decomposed and has been taken to the state medical examiner's office. Johnson said it's unknown how long the body had been there and there was no obvious cause of death.

Officials reported the man was alive as recently as March 21, as he had a UTA bus pass with that date on it in his belongings.

The man did not have any identification on or near him, prompting police to ask for the public's help to determine the man's identity.

It is believed the man is in his late 50s or early 60s and measured around five feet seven inches tall with a slim build.

He had medium length, dark gray hair and may also have had a short goatee. He was carrying a green, military-style backpack and smoked a pipe with "4 Aces" mint pipe tobacco.

It is believed he was living in the Roy or Riverdale area and staying at the Riverdale Road overpass for an extended period of time.

Anyone with any information about the man has been asked to contact the Utah Highway Patrol or police dispatch.
