CEDAR CITY — A Cedar City couple is accused of abusing their 1-month-old son.
Jarrid Anthony Stoklosa and Amelia Mae Ramirez, both 21, were each booked into the Iron County Jail on Thursday for investigation of 7 counts of aggravated child abuse and 3 counts of child endangerment.
The investigation began in March when police were called to Intermountain Healthcare Cedar City Hospital by the Division of Child and Family Services for a possible abuse case involving a 36-day-old boy who had been taken to the emergency room by Stoklosa and Ramirez, according to a police booking affidavit.
"The parents took (the infant) to the hospital because he began coughing up blood. At the hospital, (X-rays) showed that (the infant) had multiple fractures to his ribs, arm, and leg that were in various stages of healing and one acute rib fracture," the affidavit states. "In total, (the infant) had seven bone fractures."
Stoklosa blamed the boy's grandmother for the injuries when questioned by police, according to the affidavit.
However, "this accusation against the grandmother appears to be inconsistent given the number of bone fractures and the different stages of healing. Ramirez and Stoklosa both reported that no one else watched (the infant). Ramirez said she and Stoklosa take turns caring for (the infant) but are right next to each other doing so," the affidavit states.
Both parents also told police there had been no "accidents" such as the infant being dropped or falling or bumping into something.
"In addition, (the infant) tested positive for THC the night he was taken into the hospital. Marijuana/THC was found in Stoklosa and Ramirez's bedroom during the service of a search warrant," police wrote in their affidavit.
Ramirez was already under investigation by DCFS because the boy "was born with at least two controlled substances in his system that Ramirez did not have a prescription for," according to the affidavit.
Both she and Stoklosa were booked into jail Thursday afternoon.
