(KSL News) -- A 19-year-old is behind bars this morning for what both he and police say was really a dumb crime.

An officer saw the teen driving recklessly on I-215 late last night. The officer tried to pull the car over, but the teen took off, leading officers on a high speed chase through South Salt Lake on two freeways and through a neighborhood.
Eventually the teen stopped, then tried to take off on foot, but officers quickly caught him. He admitted he made a bad decision and confessed he's run from police in the past.

Scott Miller, Taylorsville Police Dept.: "I think he realizes that at this point. He's certainly had a lapse of judgement and stupidity in the beginning."
To make matters worse, the car -- which belonged to his mother -- was not insured.
