(KSL News) -- Dozens of Utahns have received a letter saying they've won 450-thousand dollars in the Canadian lottery.
Along with it comes an advance check for nearly 47- hundred dollars to supposedly cover documents and insurance fees with the winnings.
All you're asked to do is deposit the check and send a cashier's check in that amount back to the lottery.
Det. Robin Snyder, Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "The victim will take this check that's filled out to them to their bank and cash it, then send a cashier's check up to Canada to this lottery. Then it's discovered later on that the check is fraudulent, so then they're out their $4,700."
Snyder says detectives receive 10 to 12 calls a week from victims. Up to 100 people, mostly elderly, have been victimized.
