KSL.com Top 20+1: Corner Canyon reclaims No. 1 spot after big win

SALT LAKE CITY — Region play will get into full swing this week.

The undefeated Region 3 quartet (Skyridge, Lehi, American Fork and Pleasant Grove) will get a chance to start beating each other up, and Corner Canyon will get to see what its new home is made of, too.

Could that provide some change to a top group that has seen very little shakeup in the first month of the season? Time will tell.

For now, here's our most recent crack at the top teams in the state.

1. Corner Canyon (4-1, 0-0 6A Region 2)

Utah commit Isaac Wilson threw for 455 yards and a touchdown, and added 66 yards and another score on the ground, as the Chargers routed Syracuse 42-14 in the 6A heavyweight match Friday. With that emphatic win, we've moved Corner Canyon back up to No. 1.

The Chargers have scored over 40 points in each of their five games and are 4-0 against in-state competition.

2. Skyridge (5-0, 0-0 6A Region 3)

Skyridge scored 51 points in the first half before calling off the dogs in its 58-10 win over Riverton. Quarterback Jackson Stevens had 281 yards passing and four touchdowns for the Falcons.

Skyridge opens region play Friday against Westlake.

3. American Fork (5-0, 0-0 6A Region 3)

American Fork became the first team to hold Bingham scoreless in 18 years — a string of 239 games. The defense was led by Lucas Segura, who recorded 12 tackles and a sack, and Caleb Peterson, who had six tackles and an interception, in the win.

The Caveman will now enter the gauntlet that is Region 3, opening up against No. 4 Lehi.

4. Lehi (5-0, 0-0 6A Region 3)

It's been nearly two calendar years since Lehi last tasted defeat. Lehi outscored Herriman 27-7 in the second half Friday to earn a 48-28 win over the Mustangs and push their long winning streak to 24 games — a run that has included two straight 5A championships.

That streak is about to be mightily tested.

Lehi enters its first year of 6A region play Friday with a matchup against fellow undefeated American Fork. A week later, the Pioneers will get crosstown rival Skyridge.

5. Timpview (3-2, 1-0 5A Region 7)

The Thunderbirds opened up region play with a 17-0 win over Springville in a matchup of the early favorites in Region 7. Timpview held the Red Devils scoreless for the first time since 2014. Braxton Wilkerson and Quezon Villa each scored a touchdown for the Thunderbirds in the win.

6. Pleasant Grove (5-0, 0-0 6A Region 3)

The VIkings finished its non-region schedule undefeated with a dominant 34-7 win over West Jordan. Dual threat quarterback Carson Rasmussen accounted for four touchdowns (one passing, three rushing) in the win.

Pleasant Grove, the surprise team of Region 3 through the first month of the season, opens up league play against Lone Peak Friday.

7. Mountain Ridge (4-0, 0-0 6A Region 2)

The Sentinels got a week off to celebrate its big win over Lone Peak. Or, probably more accurately, got an extra week to prepare for its Region 2 showdown with No. 1 Corner Canyon Friday.

8. Syracuse (4-1, 0-0 6A Region 1)

Syracuse had a rough time against Corner Canyon, but earlier wins over Brighton and Herriman show that there's plenty of talent on the Titans' roster.

The Region 1 favorites will open up Region 1 play Friday at Farmington.

9. Brighton (4-1, 2-0 5A Region 6)

Quarterback Jack Johnson's 3-yard touchdown run with 7:11 remaining gave the Bengals a 24-20 win over Olympus and kept the Bengals undefeated in Region 6 play.

10. Crimson Cliffs (4-1, 2-0 4A Region 9)

What a difference a year makes. Crimson Cliffs lost to Desert Hills in the 4A championship in November. On Friday, it was hardly a contest. The Mustangs blasted the Thunder 49-7 to further cement their claim as the current 4A favorite.

11. Box Elder (5-0, 2-0 5A Region 5)

Daxton Sumko erupted for the Bees in a 42-34 win over Roy on Thursday. The senior running back had 281 yards on 28 carries and three touchdowns to help keep the Bees undefeated.

Box Elder is the only 5A team that hasn't suffered a loss.

12. West (2-2, 2-0 5A Region 6)

After a tough couple weeks of the season, the Panthers appear to have found their groove.

Quarterback Isaiah Su'esu'e had 301 yards passing, 138 yards on the ground, and four total touchdowns in West's 53-27 win over Alta. Running back Kelvan Malepeai added 220 yards and four touchdowns of his own in the win.

13. Lone Peak (2-3, 0-0 6A Region 3)

The Knights bounced back from a surprising loss to Mountain Ridge by beating Highland (Ariz.) 35-24 — and they can thank their defense for much of the scoring. Lone Peak returned four interceptions for touchdowns in the win.

Highland was ranked as a top 100 program by MaxPreps, and the win may help the Knights recover from a surprisingly slow start to the season. Lone Peak opens region play against undefeated Pleasant Grove.

14. Park City (5-0, 2-0 4A Region 10)

Sebastian Bodily threw for four touchdowns in Park City's 65-7 rout of Murray. The Miners have won their last two games by a combined score of 109-7.

15. Sky View (5-0, 1-0 4A Region 11)

For the first four weeks of the season, Sky View's offense has been the story of the season. On Friday, the defense took center stage.

With 1:09 left, the Bobcats got a game-saving stop on a 2-point conversion and held on for a 23-22 win over Ridgeline in the battle of undefeated teams.

16. Davis (4-1, 0-0 6A Region 1)

Sophomore quarterback Tradon Bessinger had 239 yards and four touchdowns as Davis routed Taylorsville 63-0. It was the second shutout of the season for the Darts, who have allowed just 7 points over their last three games.

17. Alta (3-2, 0-2 5A Region 6)

After a strong start to the season, the Hawks have started region play with back-to-back losses. They'll have a chance to bounce back this week against Highland.

18 Ridgeline (4-1, 0-1 4A Region 11)

In the closing minutes of a 23-22 loss to Sky View, Ridgeline was stopped on a late fourth-and-goal try that would have tied the game, a 2-point conversion that would have likely won the game, and then got one last chance after recovering an onside kick. Alas, the RiverHawks came up just short.

19. Bingham (1-4, 0-0 6A Region 2)

Call this a quality loss ranking. The Miners have faced a brutal schedule — its included two of the top three teams in these rankings and the No. 1 team in the entire nation, according to MaxPreps — and wins have been hard to come by.

The schedule appears to finally lighten up this week with Copper Hills, though the Grizzlies are a surprising 4-1 on the season.

20. Provo (3-2, 1-0 4A Region 8)

The Bulldogs had a rough trip to California, losing 41-24 to Clovis East. That was a tuneup for their matchup against Timpanogos, which could go a long way in determining the Region 8 title.

Plus-1: San Juan (5-0, 0-0 2A South)

The Broncos won their 30th straight game last week with a 67-7 blowout victory over Judge Memorial. How rare is such a feat? According to the Deseret News, San Juan is just the fifth team ever to win 30 games in a row.

• 34 — Beaver, 2019-21

The Plus-1 is meant to celebrate a team that we don't necessarily feel is a top 20 team but is still worthy of recognition. But it may be time to consider ranking the Broncos outright.
