Trains collide, derail in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY — Two trains collided near 600 North and 500 West on Monday night, causing the engines of both trains to derail.

Union Pacific spokesman Aaron Hunt said two trains headed south collided at a spot where a branch line merges with the main line. It's unknown why the trains merged at the same time.

None of the cars being pulled by the trains derailed, and no one was hurt.

As much as 1,000 gallons of diesel was spilled from the engines, officials said. Hunt said Union Pacific plans to bring in sand Tuesday to soak up the fuel and a vacuum truck to clean it up.
