Stores running out of snow-removal supplies

Marc Giauque reporting Northern Utah is digging out once again from the latest storm and, unless they already have them at home, it may be hard for residents to find supplies like shovels and snow and ice melt.

In North Ogden, an 85-year-old woman shoveled a pathway to the street, surrounded by more than two feet of snow. "Well, as long as I don't let it get too deep I can take care of it," she said.

The shovel she's using is decades old, and it may be good she doesn't need to buy a new one. Jim Smith, of Smith and Edwards, says snow shovels and pallets full of snow and ice melt have been flying off the shelves. "I would say over five times what we've usually sold in snow shovels," he said.

Smith says local suppliers didn't anticipate the need. Now it's hard to get the stuff. Smith says people have even been buying bags of water-softener salt.
