State school board saying no to freebies

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- State legislators aren't the only elected officials taking gifts and favors from people trying to influence them.

State School Board member Richard Sadler says it's not unusual for members of local and state school boards to accept tickets for concerts, plays and high-school football and basketball games.

The state board plans to circulate a set of proposed ethics rules to local boards and district superintendents for comment.

Margaret Bird of the School Land Trust Program says that organization won't let employees accept even a plate of cookies, but state education officials say their restrictions won't go that far.
