South Salt Lake cuts number of bars allowed in town

SOUTH SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) -- The South Salt Lake City Council has voted to cut nearly in half the number of bars allowed in town.

The council dropped the city's cap from 15 to eight and banned the transfer of beer licenses between bar owners. Officials say there is a correlation between crime and alcohol consumption. They hope to cut the city's crime rate and clean up its image with the move.

Bar owners will have a window of four months to sell their businesses if they want before the ordinance takes effect. After that, they will effectively have to move their establishments out of town to change ownership.
