Senate minority leader retires after 40-year legislative career

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Senate Minority Leader Mike Dmitrich says he will not seek re-election this year.

Dmitrich, a Democrat from Price, says at age 71 he's looking forward to spending more time with family and playing golf.

Dmitrich has spent most of his life as a Utah legislator. He was elected to the House in 1968 and has served continuously in either the House or the Senate for the past 40 years.

He is known at the Capitol as an advocate of higher education and economic stability. Last year, he served on Gov. Jon Huntsman's Utah Mine Safety Commission after the Crandall Canyon Mine disaster.
