SOUTH JORDAN — A suspect is in custody Sunday after police said they fired multiple shots at officers, then barricaded themselves inside a South Jordan residence. At approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, the South Jordan Police Department said officers responded to a domestic violence call near Monica Ridge Way. "As officers stood outside the residence, a shot from inside the residence was fired through the home in the direction of officers," the department said in a release. "As more officers arrived, the suspect fired multiple shots." Police said a shelter-in-place was sent to residents in the area, and adjacent homes were evacuated. The South Valley SWAT team responded to the residence, then the suspect reportedly barricaded themselves inside. Police said officers made contact with the suspect over the phone initially, but the suspect stopped speaking with them. After three hours of no contact between officers and the suspect, police said a warrant was obtained. The SWAT team reportedly entered the residence and took the suspect into custody. A probable cause statement for the arrest identified the suspect as 25-year-old Misael Omar Ruiz. The statement alleged that Ruiz was "belligerently drunk" and had gotten into a fight with his wife before police arrived. She and their two children were able to make it out of the home safely. After Ruiz was taken into custody, police found several shell casings throughout the home, the statement said. Investigators also found bullet holes in a neighboring property. Nobody was shot during the incident, but the statement said one of the responding officers was hit with debris after a bullet hit nearby. Police said the Ruiz had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. He was then taken to the Salt Lake County Jail accused of five counts of felony aggravated assault, felony discharge of a firearm and two felony counts of assault on a peace officer. He's also accused of misdemeanors for failing to stop for law enforcement, interfering with police, reckless endangerment, public intoxication and violence in the presence of a child. The department said there was no ongoing threat to the public, and the shelter-in-place was lifted. The investigation is ongoing, according to the department.
