National dance competition starts this weekend

Randall Jeppesen reporting Hundreds of ballroom dancers of all ages from across the country are showing off their best moves at BYU this weekend.

The cha-cha, samba, fox-trot, waltz, rumba, and jive are all part of the U.S. Amateur DanceSport Ballroom Championships.

"We've got little kids, from the age of 7, dancing like you can't believe, really," said Kurt Holman, director of the BYU ballroom dance program.

Holman says dancing has been big here since the 1980s. But he says thanks in part to reality TV shows, the rest of the county now has the dancing bug. "This is the largest ballroom dance competition in the United States," he said.

The dance finals start Saturday night. It does cost money to get in, but as Holman described it, it's "electric."
