Mechanics train to meet demand for natural gas-powered cars

More Utah mechanics are in training to help meet a swelling demand to convert cars to natural gas.

At Semi-Service in Salt Lake, a dozen or so technicians are learning the ins and outs of installing conversion kits and inspecting tanks. The class is sponsored by the Utah Clean Air Coalition.

"The number one issue here is the safety, because if anything happens they'll blame it on the fuel, they won't blame it on the kit and they won't blame it on the installer," said Director Robin Erickson.

She says it's one step in a popular process that the coalition has been pitching for years.

She says her coalition is working with lawmakers to standardize the industry. It is also proposing a tax on all cars to help pay for alternative fuel infrastructures.
