SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The person tapped to replace former democratic state Sen. Scott McCoy says he will continue McCoy's fight to allow financially dependent gay couples to sue in the event of a wrongful death.
Ben McAdams says he will sponsor the same bill that McCoy sponsored last year. McCoy was the only openly gay member of the Senate, but resigned to spend more time with his family and at his law practice.
McAdams was chosen by delegates in McCoy's Salt Lake City district last month to replace him.
Under the proposal, anyone in a financially dependent relationship could appeal to a judge for compensation if one person dies and it's someone else's fault.
Currently, only the victim's spouse, parents or children can sue.
