Courtney Orton reportingA South Salt Lake police officer shot and killed a sword-wielding man today.
Police say they got a call that a man inside an apartment at 256 E. Helm Ave. was throwing things off a balcony and waving around a large sword.
When officers arrived they made contact with the man and for an hour tried to get him to come out of his apartment.
They spoke with the man, he came out briefly, and the officers followed him inside.
There they say the man attacked one officer with a two-and-a-half foot long sword, striking him on the arm. Another officer fired on the suspect, killing him.
One officer did suffer a minor knife wound.
Both officers are on routine administrative leave.
