Sam Penrod ReportingA strong-arm robbery at an ATM in Salt Lake City led to a shooting and an attempted carjacking. It all happened tonight in a popular area for eating and shopping.
The trouble ended at a grocery store, where the two suspects were apprehended by police. First they robbed a woman at an ATM, then they tried to carjack someone and ended up shooting him in the wrist, but now they are on their way to jail.
Police say the two suspects approached the woman and robbed her as she was getting money out of the ATM. They then ran a block away and tried to carjack a man near the Arby's Restaurant on 400 South.
The man resisted and in the process of the struggle to get him out of his car and one of the suspects shot him in the wrist. The carjacking victim didn't give up and followed the two suspects to a Smith's Marketplace, and was able to lead police to the two men who were arrested.
Apparently the carjacking victim resisted because he didn't know the suspects had a gun.
Lt. JR Nelson, Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "He didn't want to give up the car. He didn't realize they had a gun at the time. When the gun went off, it actually hit him in the wrist."
Both the robbery victim and the shooting victim each positively identified the two men as the suspects. They were both taken to jail and face serious charges, including aggravated robbery and possibly attempted murder.
As for the man who was shot, he was taken to the hospital but is expected to be fine and obviously will have quite a story to tell.
