WEST VALLEY CITY – A Hunter High School teacher is inspiring his students to take their scientific research to a whole new level, thanks to a national grant. “There were 24 given out in the nation, so we were lucky enough to get one here,” said Trent Young, biology teacher at Hunter High. The Society for Science awarded Young $2,000 worth of equipment for his students to collect data. Students are part of the first-ever research club at Hunter and choose their own projects. Angelina Nguyen is the club president. "We’re testing the soil that we got on our Tracy Aviary field trip," Nguyen said. "This club is a way for us to grow together, help each other with projects, a way for us to collaborate.” [gallery ids="794396,794397,794398,794399"] Young said students gain valuable experience that helps them prepare for state and international competitions. “When they apply to college, everybody has a high ACT score, AP classes. But if they can show original student research, that’s what will really differentiate them from the others,” Young said. Students look forward to picking back up on their research projects when school starts in the fall.
