Groundbreaking in West Valley City marks major leap for healthcare, jobs and education

WEST VALLEY CITY — A major milestone was celebrated Friday as University of Utah Health broke ground on a new off-campus inpatient facility in West Valley City, promising to transform access to healthcare, education and employment on Salt Lake County’s west side. Located at 3750 South and 5600 West, the new Eccles Health Campus and Eccles Hospital is set to open in 2028. The project is backed by a historic $75 million donation from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, announced just under two months ago. The University of Utah said this facility will expand access to world-class healthcare and create thousands of jobs. The new hospital will feature 130 inpatient beds and outpatient clinics with 200 exam rooms, offering a wide range of specialties including cardiology, orthopedics, women’s health and pediatrics. A spokesperson for U of U Health highlighted the urgent need for such a facility, noting that the physician shortage on the west side of the Wasatch Front is five times greater than on the east side. “What we are trying to create is a brand-new type of university,” said University of Utah President Taylor Randall. “A university that creates societal impact for every member of this state. And with this hospital and the new educational programs, we think we can touch the lives of every community member.” In addition to improving healthcare access, the Eccles Health Campus is expected to generate over 2,000 jobs, providing a significant economic boost to the region. Construction starts now, and community leaders said the project represents an important investment in the west side’s future.
