Groundbreaking for wind farm in Utah's west desert

MILFORD, Utah (AP) -- A wind farm in Utah's west desert will start with 97 giant turbines.

Newton, Mass.-based First Wind held a groundbreaking Friday. It already was building gravel roads and delivering blades to the site 10 miles northeast of Milford.

First Wind President Paul Gaynor says the $400 million project is the company's largest and includes 88 miles of transmission lines.

First Wind has a contract to send the power -- up to 200 megawatts -- to Los Angeles, Burbank and Pasadena, Calif.

That's enough to power about 160,000 homes, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The company has offered several different numbers for how many wind towers it planned to install. A company spokesman clarified Saturday that it will start with 97, but could add more later for a total of 137.
