Government adds up cost of raising children born in 2007

Marc Giauque reportingIf you have a child who was born in 2007, the government is out with a price tag on how much it will cost you between now and the time he or she becomes an adult.

From birth to age 18, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says it will cost a family making $45,000 to $75,000 just over $200,000. That doesn't factor in college costs.

The price tag is not much of a surprise to parents like Jennifer Johnson. "It's a great responsibility, and you don't just get them for a little while. You have a big responsibility to these kids for a long time," she said.

The report says about a third of that money will go toward housing, surprisingly less this year for food, and more for things like day care.
