(KSL News) A Salt Lake County family did everything right when their house caught on fire this morning.
Officials say they received the 911 call around 8 a.m. The caller said a bedroom in a home located near 4900 South and 1900 West had caught on fire.
The dispatcher instructed the family to evacuate and wait for help, and that's just what they did. "They did the right thing. They called 911 immediately, they got everyone outside to a meeting place, and they were able to tell firefighters, when they arrived, that everyone was out safely, which is a great help to us," explained Capt. Jay Torgerson, spokesman for Unified Fire Authority.
Firefighters say they were able to put out the flames quickly, but there is fire damage in the attic and two bedrooms and smoke damage throughout the house.
They're still determining the cause, but family members told investigators they believe a candle near some drapes started the blaze.
