Cottonwood Canyon ski resorts stay open despite warm weather

SNOWBIRD — As warmer temperatures force many Utah ski resorts to close early, Cottonwood Canyon is bucking the trend. Alta and Snowbird continue to welcome skiers thanks to higher elevations, north-facing slopes, and careful snow maintenance. Many visitors, like 16-year-old Asher Blaisdell from Virginia, have adjusted their plans to enjoy some late-season skiing. “When we got there, we saw the mountain and it’s mostly dirt up there except maybe a third or fourth of the runs are open,” Asher said. Fortunately, he and his family were able to head to Cottonwood Canyon, where the snow conditions were much better. “It’s a little disappointing to not have the full experience, but we’re going to make the most of it and we’re excited to be here,” he added. Experts have said the Cottonwood resorts have been able to extend their ski season thanks to consistent snow management and favorable environmental conditions. Kelsey James, Snowbird’s assistant director of marketing, said, “In all honesty, the Cottonwoods have held their snowpack really well due to elevation and the north-facing aspects. We’re so excited to have people out here this spring.” For skiers looking to enjoy some spring skiing, Alta plans to remain open through April 26, while Snowbird is aiming to stay open until May 25. These Cottonwood Canyon resorts offer one of the best opportunities for late-season skiing in Utah.
