Domestic partnership registry gets new name

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Salt Lake City's domestic partnership registry will now be known as a "mutual commitment registry."

The Salt Lake City Council's decision follows a lengthy debate in the state Legislature earlier this year. Lawmakers were concerned the registry could provide a marriage substitute. A law was passed that ultimately permitted the registry to continue but mandated a name change.

The registry was implemented by Mayor Ralph Becker. It allows state employees to share insurance benefits with people who live with them and rely on them as dependents, regardless of sex.
