Daggett County creates bike patrol

Bicycles are a popular request to Santa from children. In Daggett County, Christmas came early for the sheriff's office.

A new Cannondale bicycle was donated to the Daggett County Sheriff's Office from the county's Lions Club last week.

Now, the sheriff's office has created its first-ever bike patrol.

Daggett County isn't a very large county, but Deputy John Martineau says having a bike patrol is "a win, win situation."

In a press release, Martineau says deputies with the bicycle can park their patrol vehicle in town and ride the bike to save gas. Deputies will use the bike to patrol neighborhoods and schools in Manila and Dutch John.

The patrol bike has red and blue lights on the front and back, as well as a siren.

Martineau believes the patrol bike is a great way for deputies to visit people on a one-on-one basis. He says children really enjoy talking with deputies when they are on the bike patrol.

Martineau also feels riding the bike is a great way for deputies to get exercise.

Sheriff Rick Ellsworth said in a press release the bike patrol is a good start for community-oriented law enforcement.

The sheriff's office is hoping to get two more bicycles in time for next year's recreation season at Flaming Gorge.
