SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Budget cuts are curtailing chemical safety research at the University of Utah.
The U.S. Department of Energy is reducing its budget for management of the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile. It has also cut some research grants for those developing safer ways to handle volatile materials.
The university's Center for the Simulation of Accidental Fire and Explosives received $1 million this year, about $500,000 less than expected.
Researchers say the cutbacks mean some projects will either be halted or delayed until other sources of funding are found.
